La gramola si compone di due assi di legno fissate parallelamente su un cavalletto e imperniate, ad una estremità, ad un terzo asse, il battitoio o gramile, in modo che questo possa essere sollevato e abbassato, mediante una impugnatura, nello spazio interposto.
Gli steli di lino o di canapa posti trasversalmente sulle assi fisse venivano vigorosamente battuti dall’azione del gramile.
Il processo di gramolatura aveva lo scopo di separare la filaccia greggia dalla parte legnosa dei canapuli.

Nel Maceratese la gramola veniva chiamata con diversi nomi: macegna,macingola, inciglia, smiglia, ciaola o graciòla.
Quest’ultima si differenzia dalla gramola vera e propria in quanto costituita da due gramili per raffinare ulteriormente la canapa ed è così denominata perché le tavole di legno, urtandosi, emettono un suono simile al "gracidare" delle rane.

The flax brake

The flax brake is made up of two wooden boards fastened side by side on an easel and hinged on one end to a third board (the beater or scutcher), in a way that this can be raised or lowered using a handgrip, in the space provided.

The stalks of flax or hemp placed crosswise on the fixed boards were vigorously beaten by the action of the scutching knife.

The purpose of the scutching or breaking process was to separate the raw fibres from the wooden part of the stalks.    

In the Macerata dialect the flax brake (“gramola”) had several names: “macegna”, “macingola”, “inciglia”, “smiglia”, “ciaola” or “graciòla”.

This latest expression, “graciòla”, differentiates itself from the true and proper flax brake because it was made up of two scutching knives used to further refine the hemp, getting its name from the sound emitted by the wooden boards hitting each other which was similar to the croaking (“gracidare”) of frogs.
